Bilkis Banu Case Row

NEW DELHI: A Supreme Court today held a bench by Chief Justice NV Ramana is hearing several important cases today including three petitions challenging the release of 11 men convicted for the gang rape of Bilkis Bano during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Today Supreme Court issued notice on the plea challenging the release of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case and also asks petitioners to implead the 11 convicts. The Supreme Court said that the case will be heard after two weeks.

The petition was moved by Congress leader Karti Chidambaram seeking a review of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) ruling. CJI Ramana said: “After reading the judgment, two areas, not providing ECIR and burden of proof need reconsideration.”

Chief Justice Ramana heard pleas relating to security lapses during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab in January. A committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge has found lapses in the conduct of the Punjab police during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state earlier this year.

The bail hearing of activist Teesta Setalvad was adjourned as the Gujarat government has sought two days time to respond to her plea.

Hearing the Pegasus case, CJI Ramana said 29 phones were examined and malware was found in five phones but there’s no conclusive proof of Pegasus spyware. The Chief Justice added that the committee has said the Indian government is not cooperating.

“Committee has said that Government of India not cooperating,” CJI added.

“We don’t want to make any more comments without going through the complete report,” he said.
