Supreme Court gives Green signal to resume iron ore mining and export in Karnataka

KARNATAKA: Finally after more than a decade the Supreme Court today allowed the resumption of iron ore mining and export in Karnataka, The next date of hearing is in the month of July.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana observed,

“There needs to be a level playing field for coal mines in Bellary etc. On halting the unchecked excavation in Karnataka’s three mining areas, the situation has worked out well. But the situation has now changed.”

The Court further said,

“We permit to sell already excavated iron ore stock etc in the three Karnataka districts. Permission also granted to allocate iron ore by entering into direct contracts without resorting to e-auction.”

Court also seeks an opinion from the oversight committee to increase the ceiling limit for production, mining leases, etc. The committee was ordered to send its recommendation within a month.
